Web Hosting Services & Types of Hosting

A web hosting service is any type of Internet service that allows people and organizations to create their website accessible through the World Wide Web. Web hosts give space on a server leased or owned by an individual or organization and provide Internet connectivity, usually in a data center. Web hosting is the process of generating, maintaining, and securing the Internet connection of websites and servers using a network of computer networks.

There are two types of Internet hosts physical server providers and virtual server providers. Physical server providers to host their physical servers at another location. They may also rent out a physical server from another firm to install their software and use that server to host their client’s data. Virtual server providers do not carry any equipment with them when installing their software and instead rent or lease physical server space from a hosting provider. Both types of providers have a point of connection between the clients and the server, known as the Internet connection.

There are two main categories of Web Hosting Services. Managed hosting is the most common, and the other is Self managed or dedicated Hosting. In managed hosting, the company that owns the physical server leases the whole server and assumes responsibility for all security and maintenance issues. The company, in turn, manages its security processes and maintains the server software and configuration. In a self-managed or dedicated Hosting, the company furnishes its equipment and maintains the server software.

Most businesses choose a managed or dedicated hosting web service because it gives them full control over the system. With a dedicated web hosting service, you get the opportunity to set up your security procedures and install your software packages. You are responsible for data maintenance and your server hardware and operating systems. This is advantageous to small businesses that do not possess extensive technical knowledge. Large companies usually hire web hosts that specialize in the particular applications they require.

There are two basic classification systems of hosting services available in the industry. The first is managed hosting, wherein the client maintains and operates the server and is also involved in its management. Large organizations widely use this type of hosting. On the other hand, the second classification is dedicated or managed hosting, wherein the client maintains the server software but does not have direct access to it.

The two different types of hosting services employ diverse methods of web hosting service. The unmanaged method involves the client taking full control of its server management while the managed option gives the web hosting service provider full access to the server, including all its functions and applications. This means that the server management company can delete or modify files as they see fit according to their clients’ needs. The latter classification is suitable for smaller enterprises that don’t require too much control over the server’s operations.

There are three basic types in terms of web hosting services: shared, reseller, and dedicated. A shared type of hosting service allows clients to share resources with other individuals or groups. Reseller type of Hosting enables clients to purchase additional resources from an outside third-party company in exchange for a portion of the overall web hosting fee. These services differ from shared types because the cost of resources allocated to these clients is deducted from the whole system’s overall cost. Lastly, dedicated types of hosting allow only one person to utilize the server, with all data and activities being conducted in the single entity’s name.

Different web host management types differ in the manner in which data are transferred and in what capacity. Some types of hosting allow data to be transferred in bulk, while others allow individuals to access their data by receiving it through different means, such as viewing web pages through a web browser window. Resellers and administrators have the responsibility to ensure that all activities related to the system are performed smoothly. Web host management providers have the task of ensuring that data are securely stored and that the necessary security features are in place.
